The AO is dedicated to bringing dentists and students together in a way that helps both, by transcending knowledge to students about implants and giving experienced dentists an opportunity to guide the goals of dentists of the future.
A major effort reflecting this commitment is AO’s recently launched University Partnership Program (AO-UP), which is an opportunity for the organization to connect with a number of different student groups interested in pursuing dental careers.
We are involved with undergraduate and postgraduate students, biomedical science researchers and basic science researchers, laboratory technicians, and allied staff to increase awareness and interest in dentistry, as well as the benefits of AO.
Our programs can provide enormous benefits for faculty and students. The AO is working hard to improve its outreach to undergraduate students, and give them the opportunity to learn the benefits as the “go to” organization for their dental implants.
Our work with postgraduate residents, for instance, provides an opportunity for them to connect with specialists early in their specialty training – postgraduate prosthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery and dental researchers. Many postgraduate programs require research theses. These postgraduate residents should know about research posters and presentations, which can be available to them at our annual meeting. There is also the potential for important collaborations, too, if a basic science researcher partners with a faculty member to conduct clinical trials or basic science research relative to dental implants.
The faculty mentors who are AO members serve as excellent mentors to postgraduate and undergraduate students, encouraging interest in the academy and learning about the benefits of membership in the U.S. and around the world.
Together, we are building a robust university mentor program to promote the next generation of educators, researchers and master clinicians through the skill and experience of many of our members.
If you would like your university or student organization to become involved in AO, please contact AO at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, AO’s 2017 Annual Meeting, March 15 – 18 in Orlando, FL will be another great opportunity for AO and students to connect through a vast array of workshops, posters and exhibitions that highlight all our advances over the last 30 years and pave the way for the greatness to come.
